Instructions for Taking Measurements and Tracing for Custom Footwear from HD Russell

We have had numerous requests to have our boots made for folks who don't live in Vancouver or the Lower Mainland.  Over time, we have walked our clients through the measurement and tracing process and put together a video and a set of instructions here for sending in measurements for your custom footwear.

Thank you all for your patience and working with us as we learn the technology and continue to bring classic leather footwear made the traditional way to you.

1. Find someone to help you with the process.

2. Get your paper ready, put on a pair of socks that you plan to wear with your shoes, and stand up (don't sit down).

3. Put your right foot diagonal across the paper.  Point your toes towards the bottom of the page.

4. Get the person helping you to use a pen and trace the shape of your right foot.

    • Through the instep, around the heel and to the other side of the foot, trace at a 45 degree angle to your foot.
    • When the pen is at a 45 degree angle, press it against your foot lightly.
    • Around the widest part of the ball of your foot, trace at a 90 degree right angle to the paper.
5. Don't move your foot away from the trace at all, get the person helping you to take a photo of your foot from the front and from the back without moving it away from the trace
  • With the soft tape measure and the video for reference, have the person helping you get measurements in inches for:
    • The widest point of the ball of your foot – Label it #1: Right
    • Your instep – Label #2: Right
    • The back of your heel around the ankle – Label #3: Right

Write down these measurements at the top of the page

It is important to be as precise as possible so that your custom shoes are snug, but not too tight.  Try to measure to 1/8th of an inch.

6. Put your left foot on the other diagonal across the paper (make an X across the trace of the right foot, not directly overlapping).  Point your toes towards the bottom of the page and trace the shape of your left foot.

7. Don't move your foot away from the trace, get the person helping you to take a photo of your foot from the front and from the back without moving it away from the trace

  • With the soft tape measure and the video for reference, have the person helping you get measurements in inches for:
    • The widest point of the ball of your foot – Label it #1: Left
    • Your instep – Label #2: Left
    • The back of your heel around the ankle – Label #3: Left

Try to measure to 1/8th of an inch

Please mail your completed measurements to:

1687 Nanaimo St, Vancouver BC V5L 4T9

We need the physical copy of this paper.  Don't scan and email this, because scanning can distort the precise size.

Email the photos to info@hdrussellboots.com and make sure to include your name and phone number in the body of the email.
