Chelsea

The Chelsea boot has changed very little since the 1960s. A silhouette that is as traditional as it is versatile — worn by men and women, casual and formal, and as relevant today as it has ever been. The elastic gusset and pull tab make it effortless to wear, while the clean ankle profile carries equally well with denim on a weekend or dress trousers at a dinner out.

What makes our Chelsea distinctive is in the pattern and the hands that build it. The lining and the leather upper are each hand crimped separately — both shaped on a wooden form, dried overnight, and then lasted independently from one another. The lining is pulled and shaped over the last first, followed by the leather upper. The result is a vamp that sits cleanly over the instep and forefoot, fits more precisely, and holds its form in a way that machine lasting simply cannot replicate.

Most boots combine these steps in a single machine operation. We don’t cut corners when we make your Chelsea.

Our raindrop-shaped elastic gusset — where the quarters meet the vamp — is a design detail from our pattern maker David, who has been designing and making traditional footwear for over 40 years.  Place our Chelsea alongside any other and the difference is visible.

Our Chelseas are built on the Russell 05 last unless otherwise noted. If you would like to discuss a different last shape or toe option, we are happy to talk — reach out before placing your order.
